POWER PLAY in Paperback This Week!

It's the first week of March, and POWER PLAY should be showing up in paperback almost everywhere -- not just in bookstores but in supermarkets, drugstores, and other places as well.

If you're getting this newsletter, you may already have read POWER PLAY...but if you haven't, or if you're recruiting new readers, here's your chance. It's the story of Jake, a junior executive with a major aerospace company, who finds himself a fish out of water at a high-level corporate planning retreat. When armed men take the group hostage, Jake is the only one with the skills they need to survive.

POWER PLAY made national bestseller lists around the country in hardcover, and I can only hope it succeeds as well in paperback. Thanks to all of you for your support and your word-of-mouth, which sells more books than any review or promotion...but if you want reviews, you can read all you want here. I especially appreciate the kind words from fellow authors (such as Tess Gerritsen, who said, "I dare you to read the first page. You won't be able to stop," and Lee Child, who said POWER PLAY "moves like a bullet out of a gun").

Joe's British Invasion

It was great to get such kind words from a British author, because I've just gotten back from a week in England, visiting my new British publishers, Headline UK. They were terrific hosts, and I'm excited about their plans to bring me to a new level of readership throughout the U.K.

In the U.K. this month, POWER PLAY is:

• Crime Book of the Month at Waterstone's
• Crime Thriller of the Month at Borders
• discounted at all Asda supermarkets
• displayed at all checkout lines at Woolworths stores
• prominently featured and discounted in front of store at all W.H. Smith stores
• featured in posters throughout the London Underground starting March 10

Talk about arriving with a bang...you can read more about POWER PLAY's U.K. publication here. I also spoke with David Freeman about my books for his Meet the Author web series -- you can watch interviews about POWER PLAY, KILLER INSTINCT, NO HIDING PLACE (the U.K. title for COMPANY MAN) and HIGH CRIMES at Meet the Author.

I didn't do any formal signing events, but I did sign stock at several Borders and Waterstone's in and around London. I also had a great time with the BBC's Simon Mayo and a panel of critics on Radio 5's Simon Mayo Book Club; for the next few days, you can download the interview here.

A week in London was hardly enough time, so I'll be going back in July for the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival, better known as Harrogate. It's scheduled for July 17-20 at the Crown Hotel, Harrogate, Yorkshire; the guest list includes Robert Crais, Jeffery Deaver, Tess Gerritsen and Peter Robinson. I've never been, so I'm excited at the prospect; if you're attending, make sure to say hello.

POWER PLAY on the WDEN Book Club

WDEN-FM, out of Macon, Georgia, is one of the biggest country music stations in the U.S. -- and I’m just thrilled that morning DJ Laura Starling has picked POWER PLAY as her book club selection for March. I’ll be talking to Laura live on Tuesday, March 25 at 9:15 a.m. Eastern time; if you’re not in WDEN’s broadcast area, you can listen online at www.wden.com. Laura will be giving away copies of the book, and I may drop a few hints about what I’m working on now. Which leads me to…

The Big Question

The question I’m getting most often these days is some version of this one:

Are you writing another book? When’s it coming out?

The answer to the first question is yes. I’ve had my head down the last couple of months trying to make the deadline on the next book, which will launch a new series. It’ll be out around the end of this year, but I don’t have a publication date yet -- and I can’t tell you much more than that. It’s about high-level corporate security consultant Nick Heller and his colleagues. Launching a series is a new challenge for me, and it’s important that this first book sets the stage for many more to come. I’ll share more details in the months ahead, and let you know a publication date as soon as I have one.

If you have other questions, feel free to send them on to Joe@josephfinder.com. I read all the e-mails, and while I don’t always have time to answer right away, Webmistress Clair often knows the answer, and will respond promptly.

Contest Winners -- And Another Giveaway!

The most recent trivia question was both a trick question and a spoiler -- in fact, we're not even going to repeat it here, in case some people haven't yet read PARANOIA. Since it wasn't entirely fair, we put everyone who submitted one of two possible answers into the drawing for a free signed copy of KILLER INSTINCT -- and we congratulate Stephen Book of Lubbock, TX; Anna Sutherland of Danville, VA; and Carla Nyquist of Boulder, CO.

The new trivia contest, which runs until the end of April, is a little more straightforward. What is the name of the Conover family dog in COMPANY MAN? The answer is not only in the book, but also somewhere on the website. Submit your answer by April 30 to Claire@josephfinder.com, with the subject title "Trivia contest." We’ll draw three winners at random. Unfortunately, we can only send books to U.S. addresses, and we ask that you not enter if you’ve already won something from us in the last 12 months.

We’ve also given away some signed copies of the POWER PLAY paperback, and we plan to give away a few more. Congratulations to Johnny Wright of Carlsbad, NM; Michael Spencer of Orem, UT; Tracey Gates of Mount Orab, OH; Tom Babcock of Anaheim, CA; and Annette Kalkhoff of Spirit Lake, IA. If you have a U.S. mailing address and have not won a signed book in the last 12 months, send your complete name and mailing address to Claire@josephfinder.com between now and March 31. Use “PP Paperback Giveaway” as your subject line. We’ll draw five names at random to win signed copies of the POWER PLAY paperback. Good luck!

Happy Holidays!

The calendar’s running out of pages, but I couldn’t let 2007 end without wishing you all happy holidays and a thrilling New Year and sending out one more heartfelt “Thank you” to everyone who came to a book signing, befriended me on MySpace, left a comment on my message board, or picked up a copy of one of my books.

I’ve been writing full-blast — not just on the new book (which should be out either late next year or the beginning of ’09), but also signing my name on thousands of holiday cards to all of you who’ve sent me your snail-mail address.  And for those of you who want to hear about the new novel before it comes out, make sure to check up on my online forum, my website, or my MySpace page.

It’s the time of year for “Best of” lists, and I’m delighted to see POWER PLAY showing up on a few of them (including Michael W. Rogers’ Star Talk blog – but my favorite mention of POWER PLAY lately was by Myles Knapp in the Contra Costa Times, who listed POWER PLAY among his suggested gifts for “Manly Men.”  I’m waiting to hear from Old Spice about that product endorsement deal…

Seriously, at this time of year I’m especially grateful to have the world’s best job, and it’s your support that makes that possible.  I wish all of you the best for 2008, and look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks, especially, to all those of you who wrote in with comments and reactions to POWER PLAY (and my other novels).  I love hearing from you, and as you’ve found, I answer every e-mail.  Sometimes it takes me a while, but I do answer them.  I’m convinced that hearing from you makes me a better writer.  This has been an amazing year — POWER PLAY hit Top Ten bestseller lists around the country, sold far more copies than any of my previous books — and for that I’m grateful most of all to you, my newsletter readers, for spreading the word.

The Next Book...a hint

The new book doesn’t have a title yet – that’s one of the last things I do – but it’s well underway, and due to my publishers early next year.  It will be the first in a new series, featuring international security consultant Nick Heller.

I can’t tell you much about the plot, but the research has taken a lot of my time lately – and here’s a hint: a picture of me at Logan Airport in Boston in the middle of the night with Dom Deleto, Regional Maintenance Manager for ASTAR Air Cargo.

THE CHOPIN MANUSCRIPT on Audible

Earlier this year I had the honor of being part of a unique experience – a serial novel, written by some of the top names in the genre, that would be published originally in audiobook format.

Audible started publishing THE CHOPIN MANUSCRIPT: A Serial Thriller in September, two chapters at a time, and now the entire book is available here. Jim Fusilli edited the book, which includes chapters by Jeffery Deaver, Lee Child, Lisa Scottoline, and P. J. Parrish, among others; Alfred Molina does the reading.  It’s the story of a previously unknown score by the composer Frederic Chopin (naturally) that holds a deadly secret.

JANUARY magazine called it one of the best crime novels of 2007: “an extrarordinary and entertaining achievement…a bravura performance.”

If you’re an audiobook fan, check it out – and let me know what you think!

Contest Winners -- And More Giveaways!

Congratulations to the winners of our last trivia contest -- Sarah Thompson of Littleton, CO; Zachary Urisman of Glenview, IL; and Jim Chee of Houston, TX, who received signed first editions of POWER PLAY for knowing that Nick Conover's children in COMPANY MAN were named Lucas and Julia. You still have a few days left to answer the current trivia question for a chance at a signed first edition of KILLER INSTINCT; click here for details!

Cassandra Farrar of San Antonio, TX, Sandy Le of Glendale, AZ and David Lehrman of Boca Raton, FL won audiobooks in the last newsletter, so congratulations to them as well.

And now, just for the holidays, one last contest…if you have not yet won anything from JosephFinder.com in 2007, and your mailing address is in the United States, send your complete name and mailing address to Claire@josephfinder.com with the subject heading KILLER INSTINCT giveaway between now and December 31. We’ll draw five names to win signed copies.

And remember, all newsletter subscribers are entered in a monthly drawing for a free book just for signing up for the newsletter. Happy holidays!

Thanks to You --- POWER PLAY Hits the Top Ten!

Well, I’m just back from a book tour that took me from Philadelphia to Mississippi, with stops in Memphis and Decatur (GA) and Cherokee, North Carolina.  Twelve cities, or 14, depending on how you’re counting.  One speeding ticket (from a sheriff in rural North Carolina) and one warning (from a Georgia State Trooper, for an expired plate on an Avis rental car).  You can read all about my adventures here, on my travel blog.

The big news is that after less than one week on sale, POWER PLAY debuted at #7 on the New York Times bestseller list --- my first time in the Top Ten, and by far my strongest selling book.  (The first week’s sales were up 87% over KILLER INSTINCT, according to my editor --- but who’s counting?)  It also hit #7 on the Publishers Weekly bestseller list, and #10 on the Wall Street Journal list, and #9 on the Washington Post list --- so top ten everywhere.

And for that I’m grateful most of all to you, my core readers, the subscribers to this newsletter.  Thanks for reading so enthusiastically, for telling others, for helping spread the word.  And for showing up at bookstores for signing events during the very busy back-to-school time of year.  It was great to meet so many of you.

Like all writers, I sit there in a room alone, making up stories and only imagining the effect on my (theoretical) readers.  That’s why it’s so helpful, and in some ways so moving, to meet the people who actually read the books, to see what you like (or don’t), to find out what else you enjoy reading.  After all, a novelist is nothing more than a storyteller: without an audience, you’re nothing.  I’m delighted that so many of you seem to like POWER PLAY (and Jake) so much.

POWER PLAY on Buoyant Display at Rainy Day Books

Vivien Jennings and Roger Doeren of Rainy Day Books were as hospitable as can be, and they created a great display for POWER PLAY --- helium POWER PLAY balloons and all.

In the News

If you haven’t already done so, there’s still time for you to read and comment on the interactive case study I wrote for the Harvard Business Review.  This case study describes CEO Cheryl Tobin’s first day at work, and sets the stage for the situation Jake Landry walks into in POWER PLAY. (As I've mentioned before, this is the first time the Harvard Business Review ever asked a fiction writer to do a case study for them --- an admitted fiction writer, anyway.)

The Economist magazine highlighted this case study in an incredibly nice article about me in its August 25 issue; you can read it here.

POWER PLAY’s gotten some terrific reviews, I’m delighted to say.  Check out a sample here.

In Praise of Audiobooks

POWER PLAY’s a hit not only in hardcover, but also on audiobook.  Audible.com just announced that the audio recording of POWER PLAY (read by Dennis Boutsikaris) was their #9 hit for the entire summer --- even though it didn’t come out until August 21!

I’m a fan of audiobooks, especially on long car trips.  Audible.com asked for a list of my favorites, which is online --- but I’ll share them with you here:

ANGELA'S ASHES by Frank McCourt, read by the author.   Hilarious, heartbreaking, and what better narrator than McCourt himself?

THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO by Alexandre Dumas, read by David Case.  One of the all-time great stories, and a wonderful rendition.

THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE by James M. Cain, read by Stanley Tucci.  Short, sharp, classic.

THE THIRTY-NINE STEPS by John Buchan.  A classic thriller, brooding and paranoid.

THE INVISIBLE MAN by H.G. Wells, read by Scott Brick.  This story enthralled me as a kid, and Scott Brick's reading of it still does.

A CHRISTMAS CAROL by Charles Dickens, read by Jim Dale.  A story meant to be read aloud, and Dale's one of the greatest British narrators.

FREAKONOMICS by Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner.  Kept my family totally entranced on a long car ride, and talking about it for miles afterward.

CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY by Roald Dahl, read by Eric Idle.  I love Roald Dahl's stories and have always loved this one, which is allegedly for kids but really for adults, and the reading is wonderful.

ME TALK PRETTY ONE DAY by David Sedaris.  Hard to go wrong with David Sedaris reading David Sedaris. Even comes as part of a boxed set along with NAKED and DRESS YOUR FAMILY IN CORDUROY AND DENIM.

What are some of your favorite audiobooks?  Leave your recommendations on my new discussion forum --- and if you’re not already a member of the discussion forum, keep reading…

Join the Forum!

I have been so pleased and touched by all the e-mails about POWER PLAY, and I’m tremendously grateful to all my MySpace friends.  But it’s time for me to get back to work on the next book --- and that means less time for individual e-mails, and less time on the social networking sites.

As an alternative, I’ve set up a message board at http://forum.josephfinder.com.  You can discuss my books, argue about the ending to PARANOIA, even talk about “24” or “The Office” with other Finder Fans.   Webmistress Clair will serve as your moderator, and I’ll be online as often as I can to answer questions, settle disagreements, and drop hints about works in progress.

An Offer You Can't Refuse

Do me a favor?  E-mail us your mailing (snail-mail) address.  That way, we can send you a postcard to let you know when I’m going to be in your hometown.  We always offer newsletter subscribers freebies when you come to one of my appearances --- this year, everyone who showed up with the coupon from the Joseph Finder newsletter got a free POWER PLAY miniature flashlight, not for sale in stores!  (Or even on eBay.)  Click here and give us your mailing address, and in return we’ll send you a pad of POWER PLAY Post-Its (at least, until we run out).

And don’t forget to e-mail us pictures of your pet (your dog or cat or even pet iguana) with one of my books, so we can put it on the front page of JosephFinder.com!

Mia Meets a Lobster

We introduced Mia to a lobster this summer for the first time at our house on Cape Cod.  It was interesting, to say the least.  At first, she was terrified (she's not a brave dog, alas).  She backed away, nails skidding on the floor, then tentatively approached it, and every time the lobster raised his claws, she skittered away with a frightened whine.  Eventually she got closer and closer and decided this might be a new pal --- she even licked the lobster's head, seeming to enjoy the salty taste --- until the lobster raised both claws menacingly, and Mia raced away in sheer terror.  This approach-and-avoidance game continued until everyone started getting hungry and it was time to put the lobster in a very warm bath.

More Winners, and More Prizes...

Just by signing up for this e-mail newsletter, you’re entered into a monthly drawing for a free signed book.  Congratulations to this month’s winners: Marcia Pullin of Paradise, CA; Trevor Gooding of Newton, IA; Hank Kallio of Los Angeles, CA; Michelle Knight of Dawson, PA; and Chris Rhea of Albany, OR.  They all win a free signed first edition of POWER PLAY!

Congratulations, too, to the most recent winners of our trivia contest: Sam Kesler, Bobby Mangahas, and Anne Gallick, who all knew that my golden retriever’s name is Mia.  Click here for the next trivia contest!

This month, in addition to the other contests, something special for the audiobook lovers: we’ll give away three copies of the audiobook CD of POWER PLAY to listeners whose names are drawn from entries received between now and September 30.  To enter, send your full name and mailing address to Claire@josephfinder.com before September 30, with the subject heading “Audiobook Drawing.”  Because of international postal requirements, we regret that we must limit this giveaway to U.S. mailing addresses only --- and please, don’t enter if you’ve already won a book or another major prize in this calendar year.  Thanks, and good luck!

Thanks!

Thanks to all of you for your support.  Make today your POWER PLAY!

Best wishes,

POWER PLAY On Sale TODAY!

The day’s finally arrived: POWER PLAY is on sale all in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. today! We’ll launch the book officially tonight at Borders in Boston’s Back Bay, and if you’re anywhere in the area, I hope you’ll join us. The party starts at 7:00 PM and the address is 511 Boylston St.; call 617-236-1444 for directions.

POWER PLAY is the story of Jake Landry, a junior manager with an aerospace firm who winds up at his company’s planning retreat. He’s there as a last-minute substitute for his own boss, and he feels like a fish out of water –- particularly since the only other person he knows there is his ex-girlfriend, who’s now executive assistant to the new CEO. But when armed men take the group hostage –- and seem to know way too much about the company –- Jake is the only one who can save them.

If you need another excerpt to tide you over until you get to a bookstore, click here for one that’s just for newsletter subscribers…

Reviewers Love POWER PLAY!

Reviewers have been saying nice things about POWER PLAY.

The New York Times’ Janet Maslin thought POWER PLAY was something special: “Its premise is enough to send chills through corporate boardrooms, and through civilian readers too,” she wrote. Jon Land at The Providence Journal called it “the best hostage-taking tale in years, if not ever,” and The New York Times Book Review praised its “inspired problem solving.” Library Journal called it a “nail biter of a read;” Publishers Weekly praised its “tight, fluid writing;” and Larry Gandle at Tampa Bay Online said it was “easily the most entertaining read I’ve had this summer.”

In the end, though, the only opinion that matters is yours – so please pick up a copy, if you haven’t already, and let me know what you think!

See blurbs from all the POWER PLAY reviews here.

POWER PLAY Behind the Scenes - A Harvard Business Review Case Study

One of the best pieces of advice I got, early in my writing career, was to start the story at the last possible moment -– meaning, in the middle of the action.

In POWER PLAY, Jake walks into a tense situation: executives reacting to a new female CEO who’s been hired to clean house. I was fascinated with the idea of dropping this woman CEO, Cheryl Tobin, into a “boys’ club” environment like the aerospace industry. But since POWER PLAY is about Jake and the offsite-turned-hostage situation, not about Cheryl’s career, I didn’t get to spend as much time with her as I’d have liked.

So I wrote up Cheryl’s story as a case study for the Harvard Business Review. It’s the first time a novelist has written a case study for the HBR, and I was thrilled to be asked. Several really big names from the business world, including the CFO and General Counsel of Lockheed-Martin, gave their takes on the case study in this week’s issue, which is online here. In more firsts, HBR produced a podcast and a video about the case study, which are also available on the HBR website.

The case study’s available to everyone as part of HBR’s new Interactive Case Study; everyone is welcome to comment and offer a solution. HBR’s editors will choose the best response, and highlights of the strongest responses will be featured online. Check it out – I’ll be interested to hear what you think!

The Travel Blog, Interviews and More

It’s hard for me to keep a blog going when I’m trying to write, but it’s a welcome way for me to let off steam while I’m touring. The Travel Blog goes live again later today; check it out and leave your comments here.

Lots of interviews lately and in the weeks to come, as I talk about POWER PLAY to anyone who’s interested. Check some of these out:

I recently spoke with Stephanie Padilla at New Mystery Reader about POWER PLAY, stand-alones vs. series, and the prospects of turning more of my books into movies. Read the interview here.

Richmond Life Magazine published an interview with me earlier this month, taking a broader look at my writing career.

John Dent, a blogger known as the BookieMonster, interviewed me about the industries of aerospace and publishing; read it here.

I’m the Author of the Week over at 52Books.org, a wonderful program run by the Bensenville (IL) Public Library.

And last but not least, I did a long and fascinating (well, the questions were fascinating – make your own judgment about the answers) interview with Nikki Duncan at the Romantic Realm of Shadows, here.

Join the Forum!

And once you’ve left your comments on the HBR site, come on over to www.josephfinder.com and talk about it on my new discussion forum. All are welcome to post questions for me, thoughts about the books, and more. Be one of the first 50 members to join the Forum, and we’ll give you a special gift to honor your status as a Founding Member!

Webmistress Clair will serve as your moderator, and I’ll be online as often as I can to answer questions, settle disagreements, and drop hints about works in progress. Over time, as the forum evolves, we’ll schedule some live chats, and see about organizing some events for forum members even when I’m not officially touring.
